WHAT CAUSES BAGGY EYES AND HOW TO FIX THEM?

WHAT ARE BAGGY EYES:

Baggy eyes are characterized by swelling or puffiness under the eyes, which is often accompanied by hyperpigmentation.

CAUSES

1. Age:

Collagen production, tightness, and elasticity of the skin around the eyes both decrease with advancing age. The tissues around the eyes, including some of the muscles that support them, deteriorate, allowing fat to migrate into the lower eyelid and give it a puffy appearance.

2. Hereditary:

One might have inherited from their family a tendency toward puffy eyes and dark circles.

3. Fluid retention:

High-salty foods, and medical conditions like thyroid disorders, or dehydration, all increase the amount of salt in the body and contribute to fluid retention. More salt in the body will lead to more water retention in the tissues, which will result in edema. The thin skin around the eyes makes fluid retention immediately apparent as under-eye bags.

4. Diet:

Several foods in the diet could make the eyes puffy. Such foods cause water retention in the body, which will make the tissue around the eyes swell. Salt or sodium is the main culprit.

5. Sleep disturbances:

Sleep deprivation and excessive sleep can both cause fluid retention.

6. Allergies:

Eye allergies can cause fluid accumulation under the eyes due to the release of inflammatory mediators.

7. Alcohol:

Alcohol causes fluid retention due to dehydration.

8. Smoking:

Smoking can hasten the loss of collagen causing thinning of the eyelid skin, puffiness, and under-eye dark circles.

9. Medical conditions

Several conditions can cause swelling under the eyes, such as thyroid eye disease, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, and skin conditions such as dermatitis.

10. SUN EXPOSURE:

Skin collagen and elastin, two important proteins necessary for skin firmness, structure, and flexibility, can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO AVOID UNDER-EYE BAGS:

Bags under the eyes are typically a cosmetic issue and hardly ever a sign of a serious condition. A change in lifestyle and at-home remedies can help them look better.

  1. Reduce intake of any food or beverage that causes fluid retention such as a highly salty diet and alcoholic beverages.
  2. Avoid allergens: Eye allergies cause itching, and people frequently rub their eyes as a reaction. However, this only makes the condition worse by causing the release of more inflammatory mediators, which worsens the itching. Vasodilation occurs as a result, which is visible as dark under the eyes. Due to constant rubbing, the skin of the eyelids is loose and weakened.
  3. To reduce the swelling, apply cold compresses. Applying a cold sponge, frozen spoons or slices of cucumber can help with this. This usually helps with eye allergies.
  4. Reduce sun exposure: Wearing sunglasses, under-eye sunscreen, and wide-brimmed hats can help reduce exposure to sunlight.
  5. Quit smoking

TREATMENT

Medications:

The purpose of eyedrops is only to relieve discomfort, itching, and watering of the eyes. No drugs, creams, or serums can cure under-eye bags.

FACIAL PROCEDURES:

The use of laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and fillers can improve skin tone, tighten the skin, and rejuvenate the under-eye area, but it is not very effective in reducing under-eye bags.

TEAR TROUGH FILLERS:

The delicate and thin lower eyelid skin makes hyaluronic acid fillers a common treatment choice for under eye issues.

The goal of fillers is to improve the definition and volume of the face by injecting it into the deeper structural levels of the face, close to the bone and beneath the muscle. This also addresses age-related fat and muscle loss.

Since the body naturally produces hyaluronic acid, these fillers can be effectively metabolized. The enzyme hyaluronidase can dissolve hyaluronic acid, making the procedure reversible. Hyaluronic acid fillers produce immediate results and don’t require surgery for placement or removal.

ENDOLIFT LASER:

Treatment for lower eye bags with the Endolift laser appears to be both safe and effective. It is a non-invasive therapy with positive results, low recovery time, and few side effects.

By treating both the deep and superficial layers of the skin, Endolift therapy efficiently cures lower eye bags. It also encourages the synthesis of new collagen, redefines and improves skin texture, even months after treatment, and decreases excessive fat.

This is a fantastic alternative for people who don’t want to have surgery. The operation is painless, bloodless, and doesn’t call for stitches.

In addition to reducing under-eye bags, Endolift therapy also significantly reduces wrinkles and increases skin elasticity. It takes around 3-6 months to see the final results depending upon how much collagen is produced.

EYELID SURGERY:

Eyelid surgery called lower blepharoplasty or lower lid lift reduces puffiness in the lower eyelid.

As a result of connective tissue thinning brought on by aging or surgical trauma, the fat surrounding the eye socket may protrude and show up in the lower eyelids as under-eye bags.

Lower blepharoplasty involves removing prolapsed fat and/or excess, loose skin from the lower eyelids to treat wrinkles, skin redundancy, and fat bulges.

During lower eyelid blepharoplasty, an incision is made inside the lower lid to avoid scarring. Once the prolapsed fat is removed or burned, the baggy eyes become less noticeable

Eyelid surgery side effects include dry eyes, watery eyes, pain, swelling, bruising, and blurred vision. Rarely there can be infections, damage to the eye muscles, corneal abrasions, and drooping eyelids.

Discuss with your doctor the benefits and side effects of the treatments.
